The Color Gradient Test displays smooth transitions across the full brightness and hue range so you can spot color banding, posterization, and gamma issues on your display. On a healthy 8-bit or 10-bit panel, the gradient should look like an even, continuous blend from black to white or from one color to another. If you see visible steps, stripes, or sudden brightness jumps, your panel is either dithering poorly or running at a reduced color depth (often 6-bit + FRC on cheaper laptop screens). How to use the Color Gradient Test

  • Set your display brightness between 60% and 80% for the most accurate assessment.
  • Turn off dynamic contrast, HDR auto-adjust, and any "vivid" picture modes.
  • Click Start to launch the full-screen gradient sequence.
  • For each gradient, step back about 60 cm from the screen and look for visible bands or stripes.
  • Cycle through the grayscale, red, green, blue, and combined gradients.
  • Note any banding — you can use the results in a warranty claim or return.

How to interpret your results

A perfect 10-bit panel shows a completely smooth, seamless gradient with no visible transitions. Good 8-bit panels show extremely faint banding only under close inspection. 6-bit + FRC panels (common on budget laptops) show mild but visible bands, especially in dark grays and skin tones. Anything with obvious, wide stripes indicates a driver issue, wrong color profile, or a low-quality panel not suited to photo/video work.

Check that your OS is configured to output 10-bit color. On Windows: NVIDIA/AMD control panel > 10-bit color depth. On macOS: it is enabled automatically on supported panels.

Gradient looks stepped in HDR
