How to use the Microphone Test

How to interpret your results
A healthy mic shows a steady level meter that peaks between 60% and 85% during normal speech. Flat-line meters indicate the mic is muted or not selected. Playback with clear speech and low background hiss means the mic is working; muffled or distorted playback suggests a low-quality mic, wrong sample rate, or heavy compression.
Common issues and what they mean
No audio in the meter
The wrong input device is selected. Open browser settings > site permissions > microphone and choose the correct device.
Constant background hum
Ground-loop noise from a laptop charger is common. Unplug the charger and retest, or use a USB isolator.
Playback is very quiet
Boost mic input in Windows Sound Control Panel or macOS Sound settings; some laptop mics need a +20 dB boost.
