If a laptop is acting up, the first instinct is usually to install a diagnostic suite. Most of them are decent, but each has blind spots — and several of the "free" tools are actually trialware that nags you to upgrade. Here's an honest comparison of the major free diagnostic options, what they catch, and what they miss.
Browser-based tests (no install)
The simplest option is also the most under-used. Modern browsers expose more hardware APIs than people realise: getUserMedia (camera/mic), Battery Status, Gamepad, requestAnimationFrame (refresh rate), WebAuthn (fingerprint), and more.
Strengths
- Zero install — nothing to download or trust — and they work on any OS.
- Identical results across Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS.
- Run inside the user's own browser, so privacy stays local.
Weaknesses
- No access to SMART data, CPU temps, or RAM diagnostics — those need OS-level access.
- Battery API doesn't expose raw mWh or cycle count on all platforms.
- Can't run boot-time tests (memory, disk surface).

Manufacturer diagnostics (Lenovo, Dell, HP)
Every major OEM ships its own diagnostic utility — usually accessible by pressing F12 at boot or installed pre-OS.
- Lenovo Vantage / Lenovo Diagnostics — solid for ThinkPads. Tests CPU, memory, storage SMART, battery, network.
- Dell SupportAssist — similar coverage on Dell consumer and Latitude lines. The "ePSA" pre-boot version is more thorough than the in-OS one.
- HP PC Hardware Diagnostics — Windows and UEFI versions. Memory and disk surface tests are good.
Strengths
- Pre-boot tests run without the OS — catch issues that crash Windows.
- Manufacturer-specific battery and firmware tests.
- Hardware fault codes that map directly to support tickets.
Weaknesses
- Locked to that brand. ASUS tools won't help a Lenovo.
- In-OS versions can be bloated, slow to launch, and push other software.
- UI varies dramatically between firmware versions.
What to use them for: warranty support, motherboard or memory faults, firmware-level battery health.
CrystalDiskInfo (free, Windows)
Reads SMART data from SATA and NVMe drives. The single best tool for catching a dying drive before it dies.
Strengths
- Clear "Good / Caution / Bad" verdict.
- Reports remaining drive life on most NVMe.
- Free, lightweight, no nag.
Weaknesses
- Windows only.
- Doesn't run surface scans — only reads what the drive reports.
- Some USB-attached drives won't return SMART through their bridge chip.
What to use it for: monthly health check on every internal drive. Look at "Wear Range Delta," "Reallocated Sectors," and "Available Spare." On NVMe, "Percentage Used" tells you exactly how worn the drive is.
HWiNFO64 (free, Windows)
The most thorough hardware inventory and sensor monitor available for free. Reads every temperature, voltage, fan, and power rail your motherboard exposes.
Strengths
- Unmatched sensor coverage.
- Logs to CSV for stress-test analysis.
- Detects oddities like throttling, low VRM headroom, faulty fan controllers.
Weaknesses
- Overwhelming UI for non-technical users.
- Read-only — won't fix anything, only diagnose.
What to use it for: thermal investigations, stress-test logging, finding the actual cause of throttling during gaming or video work.
MemTest86 (free, bootable)
The gold standard for RAM diagnostics. Runs from a USB stick, completely outside the OS.
Strengths
- Catches the marginal failures Windows misses entirely.
- Standard recommendation from every laptop service centre.
- Free for personal use (a paid "Pro" version exists but isn't necessary for most users).
Weaknesses
- Needs a separate USB stick and a reboot.
- A full pass on 16 GB takes around 1 hour; reliable diagnostic needs at least 4 passes.
- Doesn't catch CPU- or controller-side memory issues, only DRAM cells.
What to use it for: any unexplained BSOD, random reboot, file corruption, or system instability that survives a clean OS install.
Apple's built-in diagnostics (macOS)
Mac users have it easy — Apple Diagnostics is built into the firmware. Boot while holding D (Intel) or power button → Options → Diagnostics (Apple Silicon).
Strengths
- Zero install, covers RAM, fans, storage, battery, sensors.
- Error codes map directly to Apple Support articles.
Weaknesses
- Apple-only.
- High-level pass/fail only — doesn't expose detailed numbers.
- Misses display-quality issues like dead pixels, banding, or backlight bleed.
