Fingerprint Sensor Test — Free Online Test

Our Fingerprint Test uses the WebAuthn standard to trigger your device's built-in biometric authenticator — Windows Hello, Touch ID, or an Android fingerprint reader — and confirms whether the sensor recognises your enrolled fingerprint. It is a safe, industry-standard check that never sees or transmits your actual biometric data; everything stays on-device.

How to use the Fingerprint Sensor Test

  • Enrol at least one fingerprint in your operating system settings first.
  • Click "Start Fingerprint Test" and place your finger on the sensor when prompted.
  • Watch the result badge: Success, Cancelled, Timeout, No Authenticator, or Unsupported.

How to interpret your results

A "Success" result means the sensor read your finger, matched it against an enrolled template, and passed the WebAuthn user-verification challenge — the sensor works correctly. "Cancelled" or "Timeout" means the prompt appeared but no fingerprint was accepted; retry. "No Authenticator" means no biometric hardware is available or nothing is enrolled.

Common issues and what they mean

Sensor prompt never appears

The device likely has no biometric hardware, or Windows Hello is disabled. Check Sign-in Options in Settings.

Sensor always rejects the finger

Re-enrol the fingerprint. Dry hands, cuts, or a smudged sensor cause most false rejections.

Test works but Windows sign-in fails

Delete the fingerprint template in Sign-in Options and re-enrol. Corrupt templates are common after major Windows updates.

When to run this test

  • After a Windows or macOS major update that broke biometric sign-in.
  • When buying a used laptop advertised with a fingerprint reader.
  • Before relying on the sensor for banking-app authentication.

Frequently asked questions

Is my fingerprint uploaded anywhere?

No. WebAuthn keeps all biometric data on your device; only a cryptographic assertion is exchanged with the browser.

Why does Safari not show a prompt?

Safari requires Touch ID hardware and macOS 12+. On desktops without Touch ID, no prompt will appear.
