How to Test a Laptop Fingerprint Scanner Online (Windows and Mac)

If no prompt appears, the problem is almost always setup or drivers, not the sensor itself.

What an online fingerprint test can and cannot check

A browser can't read your fingerprint. It never sees the image of your finger, and that is by design. It asks the operating system to confirm who you are, and the system answers yes or no.

So the online test tells you:

  • Whether the laptop has a working biometric sensor that the system recognises
  • Whether Windows Hello or Touch ID is set up and responding
  • Whether a real touch on the sensor is accepted

It does not tell you how accurate the reader is, or whose finger was scanned. For accuracy, run the test five or six times in a row and count the misses. More than one miss in six on a clean, dry finger is worth looking into.

Step by step: testing on Windows 11 and Windows 10

  1. Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and confirm Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello) says it is set up. If it shows "This option is currently unavailable", jump to the driver section below.
  2. Open the fingerprint test and click Start.
  3. A Windows Security window appears. Place the finger you enrolled on the sensor.
  4. A green result means the scanner works end to end.

If the Windows Security window asks for a PIN instead of your finger, Windows doesn't see a working fingerprint reader right now. Click "More choices" to check if fingerprint is listed at all.

Testing on a MacBook with Touch ID

  1. Open System Settings > Touch ID & Password and make sure at least one fingerprint is added.
  2. Open the test in Safari or Chrome and click Start.
  3. Rest your finger on the Touch ID key when macOS asks.

Touch ID failing after a keyboard or top case repair is common. The sensor is paired to the logic board, and only Apple or an authorised shop can re-pair it.

Fingerprint reader not detected: the fix order

Work through these in order. Most people are sorted by step three.

  1. Clean the sensor. Skin oil and dust cause more failures than broken hardware. Wipe it with a microfibre cloth and a little isopropyl alcohol.
  2. Re-enrol your finger. Remove the fingerprint in Sign-in options, restart, and add it again. Scan the finger at several angles.
  3. Reinstall the driver. Open Device Manager and expand Biometric devices. Right click the reader (often Synaptics, Goodix, ELAN or Validity), choose Uninstall device, tick "delete the driver", and restart. Then install the latest driver from your laptop maker's support page, not a generic one.
  4. Check the BIOS. Some Lenovo, Dell and HP models let you switch off the fingerprint reader in firmware. Make sure it is enabled, and look for a "reset fingerprint data" option.
  5. Install pending Windows updates. Feature updates sometimes break biometric drivers, and the fix usually arrives in the next cumulative update.

Testing a fingerprint reader on a used laptop

When you buy second hand, the seller's fingerprints are tied to their account, so you can't enrol your own until the laptop is reset. You can still check the hardware:

  • Look in Device Manager for a working entry under Biometric devices, with no yellow warning icon.
  • Run the fingerprint test. If Windows offers fingerprint as an option, the sensor is alive.
