If you've ever spotted a tiny black or coloured dot on your laptop screen that refuses to go away, you've met one of the two most common LCD defects: a dead pixel or a stuck pixel. They look similar at a glance, but they have different causes, very different repair odds, and very different implications for your warranty.

The technical difference

Every pixel on an LCD or OLED display is made of three sub-pixels: red, green, and blue. A controller switches each sub-pixel between brightness levels to produce colours.

  • A stuck pixel occurs when one or more sub-pixels get jammed in the "on" state, displaying a permanent red, green, blue, cyan, magenta, yellow, or white dot.
  • A dead pixel occurs when the transistor controlling that pixel fails entirely. The whole pixel goes dark and stays black on every frame, regardless of what the rest of the screen is doing.

On OLED panels the terminology gets blurrier — there are no separate sub-pixels with backlight, so a "dead" OLED pixel is genuinely off, while a "stuck" pixel often indicates a partial sub-pixel failure or early burn-in.

How to tell which one you have

  • Stuck on black background = white or coloured dot → stuck pixel.
  • Stuck on white background = black dot → dead pixel.
  • Visible on all colours = always-black on every screen → confirmed dead.

Take a phone photo if you want a permanent record for a warranty claim. Inspect under a magnifying glass or zoom in on the photo — sometimes what looks like a single dead pixel is actually a tiny piece of dust between the polariser layers.

What causes them

Stuck pixels most often appear from manufacturing variance — a sub-pixel that didn't fully release after the final test cycle at the factory. Heat cycling, prolonged use of static images, and mechanical stress (e.g. pressing the screen during transport) can also unstick or re-stick sub-pixels later in the panel's life.

Dead pixels almost always come from a hardware failure: a blown transistor, a broken row/column driver line, or physical damage to the TFT layer. Once a transistor is dead, no software trick will revive it.

Repair odds

Stuck pixels: many recover with one of these techniques — recently stuck pixels respond best, and there is no guaranteed success rate.

  1. Pixel cycling — flash R/G/B at high frequency over the affected area. Our Pixel Repair tool does this; leave it running for 15–60 minutes.
  2. Gentle pressure — wrap a microfiber cloth around a blunt stylus, find the stuck pixel with the screen off, apply light pressure, then turn the screen on. Use sparingly and at your own risk on glossy or touchscreens.
  3. Tap method — a few light taps on the affected area while running the pixel cycler.

Dead pixels: effectively 0% recover with software. A truly dead pixel needs panel replacement, which on a laptop usually means a $150–$400 repair.

Warranty thresholds

Most laptop manufacturers publish a "dead pixel policy" hidden deep on their support sites. Policies vary by product line and change over time — always check the current policy for your exact model before filing a claim. Historically typical thresholds:

  • Apple: has generally replaced consumer Mac and Studio Display panels for any dead or stuck pixel — book a Genius Bar appointment.
  • Dell premium (XPS, Latitude 9000): zero bright dots, up to 2 dark dots before replacement.
  • Lenovo ThinkPad: a matrix by count and clustering; commonly around 3 bright or 5 dark dots.
  • HP: commonly around 3 bright / 5 dark dots on consumer lines.
  • Razer / ASUS ROG / MSI gaming: often zero bright dots.

If you're inside the return window of a retailer like Amazon, Best Buy, or Costco, you can simply return without engaging the manufacturer warranty — much faster.

When you should act fast

If a dead or stuck pixel appears within the first 30 days, document it immediately with photos against pure white and pure black backgrounds and contact the seller. After 30 days you're usually pushed into the slower manufacturer warranty process. After the panel warranty expires (typically 1 year), repairs come out of your pocket.

Preventing future pixel issues

You can't fully prevent transistor failures, but you can reduce the odds of stuck pixels and early panel ageing:

  • Avoid leaving high-contrast static images on screen for hours.
  • Don't store laptops with the lid pressed against hard objects.
  • Use a screen saver or lock screen with motion.
  • Keep the screen out of direct sunlight for long periods.
  • Clean only with a dry microfiber cloth or a dedicated screen-safe solution.
