You found a dead pixel. Whether you get a free replacement panel or a polite refusal depends almost entirely on two things: which brand made the display, and how quickly you can prove the defect exists.
This guide sets out what each major manufacturer will actually accept in 2026, the ISO standard they all quote, and the exact steps that turn "I think there's a dot on my screen" into an approved claim.

The standard everyone quotes: ISO 9241-307
Almost every warranty document references ISO 9241-307 (the successor to ISO 13406-2). It defines four defect classes, measured per million pixels:

Nearly all consumer laptops and monitors are warranted to Class II. That means a single dead pixel is, strictly speaking, within specification — the panel is "working as designed" even though you can see the fault.
This is why the retailer return window matters more than the warranty for the first few weeks. A return needs no defect threshold at all.
Two more definitions worth knowing, because support staff use them precisely:
- A bright dot is a subpixel permanently lit — it shows as a coloured dot on a black background.
- A dark dot is a subpixel permanently off — it shows as a black dot on a white background.
Bright dots are treated more seriously by most brands because they are more visible in normal use.
Dell
Dell operates the most consumer-friendly pixel policy of the big vendors. Its Premium Panel Exchange, included with most XPS, Alienware and UltraSharp products during the standard warranty, replaces the display if there is even one bright pixel.
- Covered lines: XPS laptops, Alienware, UltraSharp monitors, and many Latitude configurations.
- Threshold: one bright dot triggers replacement on covered products; dark dots follow Class II on some lower-tier lines.
- Practical note: mention "Premium Panel Guarantee" by name when you open the case. Front-line agents sometimes quote the generic Class II threshold first.
HP
HP grades defects by position as well as count. Its panel specifications divide the screen into a central zone and an outer zone, and a defect in the centre is weighted more heavily than the same defect near a corner.
- Consumer Pavilion and Envy lines: Class II thresholds apply.
- EliteBook, ZBook and higher-tier DreamColor displays: stricter thresholds, and DreamColor panels are typically zero-bright-dot.
- Practical note: when you photograph the defect, include the whole screen in frame so its distance from centre is visible. HP support asks for this routinely.
Lenovo
Lenovo applies Class II across most ThinkPad, IdeaPad, Yoga and Legion products, with stricter standards on premium panels.
- ThinkPad X1 series and P-series workstation displays: often warranted to a stricter, effectively zero-bright-dot standard, particularly on OLED and high-gamut configurations.
- Consumer IdeaPad and Legion: Class II.
- Practical note: Lenovo's hardware maintenance manuals are public. Find your model's manual, quote the display FRU part number in the case, and the exchange conversation gets substantially shorter.
Apple
Apple publishes no numeric pixel threshold for MacBooks, iMacs or Studio Displays. Assessment is subjective: a technician evaluates whether the defect is visible at a normal viewing distance under normal lighting.
In practice this works in your favour on Retina panels, where a single dead pixel is usually clearly visible and generally accepted. It works against you if the defect only appears under a solid colour field that you would never see in daily use.
- Route: Genius Bar appointment or an Apple Authorised Service Provider. Mail-in works but takes longer.
- Practical note: reproduce the defect on the machine while the technician is watching. A photo of a screen is much weaker evidence than the screen itself.
Samsung and LG monitors
Both vendors run tiered policies.
- Consumer monitors: Class II, and multiple defects are usually required before an exchange is approved.
- Professional lines (Samsung ViewFinity, LG UltraFine and many colour-critical models): zero-bright-dot guarantees, often time-limited to the first 6 or 12 months.
- Practical note: check whether the zero-bright-dot guarantee on your model has a shorter window than the overall warranty. This is the most common reason a valid-looking claim is rejected.
The five-step claim that actually works
- Test properly. Run our screen test through every solid colour. Count the defects and note whether each is bright or dark, and roughly how far from the centre it sits.
- Photograph in two states. One shot on a full white field (shows dark dots), one on a full black field (shows bright dots). Include the whole screen so position is clear. Do not crop.
- Try the pixel repair tool first. Stuck pixels — locked on one colour rather than fully dark — often revive after 15 to 30 minutes of rapid colour cycling. A defect that resolves itself is faster than any warranty claim.
- Check the retailer window before the warranty. If you are inside a Best Buy, Amazon, Currys or MediaMarkt return window, a return or exchange is faster and has no defect threshold. Warranty is your fallback, not your first move.
- Open the case with specifics. Give the model number, serial, defect count, defect type and position, purchase date, and the policy name you are claiming under. Vague reports get the Class II answer; specific ones get escalated.
Regional consumer law overrides the warranty
Manufacturer policy is not the whole picture. In the UK, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you 30 days to reject faulty goods outright, and the retailer bears the burden of proof for six months. Across the EU, the two-year legal conformity period applies regardless of what the warranty document says, with a one-year presumption that the defect existed at delivery.
